You don’t have to be good at it to do it. We all know this. It’s what we tell the kids. Practice makes perfect. Just give it a go. We are patient and kind with children while they are learning. But as adults, we hear too often the false reasoning that they are just not creative, artistic, athletic, talented, or whatever. There is more than one lawyer out there who wants to be a singer.

But never gave it a crack.

I once met a child who explained to me — ‘You just try, and then you can do it.’

There’s more to your extra-curricular pursuits than being good at them. Any endeavour which stretches the realms of your personal possibilities is good for you. There is much to be gained.

In photography one is encouraged to use the mistakes and see what can be found in the overexposed or underexposed, fuzzy, grainy, weird angled shot and in science play and exploration are essential. A, let’s see what happens if approach.

It’s good to be a dabbler, a novice, an amateur. It is okay to play with being a potter and give up in dismay and try basket weaving instead. What’s important is the exploration of self, the venturing into the realms of the unknown. The feel of the clay as it wobbles on the wheel and…
